“This guy…did he ever mention the name of his home?”

Valerie lowered her gaze to the floor and gave it a thought. The name of his home?

“He didn’t, mum” she sniffed.
“I have no idea”.

Mrs Houston sighed pathetically, looking so uncomfortable.

“What is it, mum?” Valerie asked and Mrs Houston was about saying something when the door suddenly went open with her husband barging in.

“Valerie!” He called raucously, making Valerie and her mom startled a bit.

“Honey…”

“How could you, Valerie?” He roared. “How could you think of bringing such shame and disgrace to my name??”

Valerie sprang on her feet, looking at her like for a better explanation. Oh! She’d told him about it.

“Of all the times, this was the best time to get pregnant?? For who exactly?”

“Hey, calm down….”

“Don’t tell me to calm down, woman!” He cut Mrs Houston off.
“How could you just sit back and watch her get pregnant? You know she’s all we’ve got. How could you let this happen?”

“Hold on; are you trying to blame me?” She scoffed.

“Well, who else do I have to blame?” He rasped and turned to Valerie.

“I invested so much in you, Valerie. I went through a lot for you, yet this is how you pay me back?? By bringing shame to my name and being a single mum? What is wrong with you?”

“Come on, Houston! You need to stop this…”

“It’s okay, mum” Valerie finally cut in, tears already making a path in her face.

“It’s all my fault and I… I’m ready to face it. I’m a… I’m a shame to him”
She paused and sniffed, then looked at her father

“It’s fine” she added and with that, ran out of the room.

“Valerie! Hey…!” Her mother tried going after her, but suddenly stopped by the door and turned back to face her husband.

“Seriously Houston, was that really neccesary?” She glared hard at him.
“I called you on phone to tell you about a pressing issue regarding our daughter, and this is the best you can do?? By barging in here to yell at her?? Seriously??”

“Don’t try to speak to my conscience, woman because I’m also mad at you. Valerie was meant to be our pride, not this. This shouldn’t be happening”

“So, what? Does she deserve to die?” Mrs Houston snapped in.

“I wasn’t expecting this from you, Houston. I really wasn’t”.

She turned angrily and stormed out of the room.
*
She rushed out of the house, looked left and right for Valerie, but there was no trace of her.
Goodness! Where could she be??

Then, she checked the cars and discovered one of her cars were missing. Valerie had driven out of the compound.
*************

Valerie parked the car in front of the bar and took a long time before stepping out of it.

She’d been crying the whole time, her eyes were so red and heavy already and her heart….

She sniffed as she walked into the bar and felt so thankful it wasn’t all filled up and noisy because at that moment, the pains in her head was just too much for her. Just too much.

“Hey Miss” the bartender beamed when she got close and stood in front of his counter.

“What can I get you?”

“Anything” Valerie mumbled weakly.
“Just… something cold.

She sniffed again and took a seat, resting her head in her palm while she waited for her drink and finally, it was served to her.

Tears rested at the brink of her eyes as she settled the bartender and began drinking dejectedly from her bottle.

Her life was ruined, wasn’t it? Her life was ruined!

*How could you think of bringing such shame and disgrace to my name??!” Her father’s words resounded in her head.

*I invested so much in you, Valerie. I went through a lot for you, yet this is how you pay me back? By bringing shame to my name and being a single mom?*

More tears.

She disappointed her parents; made them so upset. But it wasn’t her fault. She….she never wanted to do any of it .

After the intercourse, she’d taken some pills right? She wanted to avoid it, but had.no idea it couldn’t be avoided. If only she had the slightest idea, she would’ve avoided it definitely. She would have done so!

She gulped more of the wine down and suddenly, heard a familiar voice from behind:
“Being depressed?”

She whipped her head in a full force to take a look and…. what the hell?! It was Hapitha!!

Hah! She gasped and stood up immediately, part of the pains she felt a while ago, being converted into fear and anger.

The woman was looking more wretched and wore a grim smile on her face.

“Long time, Valerie” she chuckled. “Did you miss me?”

“Stay away from me!” Valerie said huskily as she grabbed her keys from the table and turned around to leave,
But Hapitha was quick enough to grab her by the wrist.

“Calm down, beautiful” she smiled. “I’m not her for trouble”.

“Then, stop touching me! Or I’ll scream my lungs out and make everyone rush in to the bar to beat you up!” Valerie said and Hapitha bursted out in laughter.

Well, eyes were already peeping at them in the bar. So, she had to let go of the wrist.

“I’m only trying to help, Valerie” she said.

“I don’t need your Help” Valerie gritted her teeth and started walking.

“How about helping you get to Jericho so you could meet the father of your unborn child?” She asked and just like the wind, Valerie stopped moving.
