“Um mom?” Jeremy called in the middle of breakfast preparation the next day.
“Yeah?” She replied absently, taking the kettle off the gas.
“I got invited to join a study group yesterday. It’s a group of a few of my classmates and I want to ask for your permission first before I give them a reply” he said.
“Oh.. how long is it for?” She asked.
“An hour after school hours” he said. She paused for a brief moment, thoughtfully.
“That’s fine. It’s an advantage for you too, it’ll help you maintain your good grades and you get to socialize more at your new school, so yeah” she said with a shrug and a small smile across her lips.
“Really?” Jeremy asked, with his brows narrowed, “Just so you know it’s fine if you don’t want me to do it-
“Why won’t I?” She cut him off.
“You know.. the store and Axel” Jeremy shrugged.
“Oh honey, you don’t have to worry about that. Your studies should be your priority now, and besides Kylie will start assisting me at the store pretty soon, you should give yourself a break. If you want to join the study group at your school then you should, I’m totally fine with it!” She said.
“Thanks Mom” Jeremy placed a kiss on her cheek.
“You’re welcome. It’s not your fault that you’re so smart!” She pinched his cheek lovingly and he giggled before going back to preparing breakfast.

After having breakfast with the rest of the family, Jeremy and Kylie started heading out for school.
“Jeremy, don’t stay out too late after school, okay?” His mom said after him.
“Sure!” He waved at her and head out with Kylie.
After small chitty chats, they parted ways and Jeremy made his way to school.

Jeremy walked into the school through the entrance and just as he reached the parking lot to the school building, he saw Becca walking away from it. She had her hoodie on and he recognized it as the one she wore the previous day.
“Hey?” He rushed to her before she could get to the building.
“What?” She replied coldly, sensing his presence beside her but still she made no move to spare him a glance nor pause to listen to him.
In fact she wanted to get rid of him as soon as she can.
“Er.. I was the one talking to you at the library yesterday, you seem to not recognize me” Jeremy said, trying to keep up with her hasty steps.
“It’s probably cos there’s nothing to recognize about you. So?” She said, still walking.
“Oh,” Jeremy felt a slight hit on his chest at her words. “I thought you truly didn’t remember me. You said-
“I don’t forget a face. And if you were as smart as everyone says, then you should’ve figured that I don’t want to talk to you, you probably know why!” She said, turning briefly to him with a frown on her face and then hurried her steps away..

Jeremy stopped and sighed softly..
She does hate him!
He knows why? Could it be because of the assignment?
Was Harrison right after all? Is she really that kind of a freak?

Jeremy walked to class and took his seat, glancing at his seatmate who didn’t bother sparing him any. He brought his bag closer.
To her, It was more like he wasn’t even there.

“Good day, everyone and settle down” a male teacher walked in after a while to commence the the day’s work.

Jeremy took out his workbook as the teacher instructed and flipped through the pages to the next lesson, as he made to write on it, he noticed Rebecca’s gaze on him and he tilt his head towards it. She levelled her gaze to his and with a smirk on her face she stared at him and then scoffed with a slightly audible mockery tone., me before looking away. Jeremy grimaced for a moment before facing his work.
He held his pen above the page, ready to write when a palm stopped him, resting on his and a low yet sharp “no!” emanated.

Jeremy paused and turned to look at his seatmate on the other side, he shook his head at him.
“You’re to leave this page for diagram or illustration. Mr James would be furious if he sees that you wrote here.
For notes like this, we skip the blank page and use the next, if you don’t want to get on his bad side” he explained.
“Thank you..!” Jeremy said appreciatively.
“It’s John and you’re welcome. Next time, when it’s just note and no diagrams, be sure to always skip this page” he said, referring to the blank page. He flipped through his book and stopped at the next. “Write here” he said Jeremy nodded, smiling in appreciation.
He turned to McCoy but she didn’t seem to be bothered about him, he wondered if she had noticed his error and scoffed at him instead of correcting him.
He shrugged the thought off and began writing.
.

During lunch break, Jeremy told Harris about Rebecca’s behavior to him.
“She just stared at me with a smirk on her lips and when I stared back, she suddenly scoffed and turned away” he explained. “But I’m not sure if she was actually glad that I was making a mistake or she just felt like showing me a side of her” he added.
“A side?” Harrison scoffed. “Nah..she definitely wanted you to get into trouble with Mr James, that man is like the meanest teacher ever!” He said.
“But why would she want that? I mean is it still about the assignment or she’s just like that?” Jeremy asked.
“It is plus she’s a crazy freak. I told you she wouldn’t let it slid. She’s obsessed with being in first place and she becomes a maniac when her obsession isn’t fulfilled!” Harrison replied.
“But.. that’s absurd. I mean it’s not a competition and when you meet someone doing better than you in some things, you’d want to do your very best or get along with that person to learn stuffs more than you understand. At some point in life, you can’t always be the best, challenges will come and It’s okay to be jealous but she’s just being plain wicked” Jeremy complained.
“Now you get why she’s a psychopath. She’s not normal and before it gets worse, just keep ignoring and don’t let her abnormality get to you” he said.
“How can I?’ Jeremy thought. “I can’t hide that I’m bothered tho” he said.
“Don’t be. You’ll be fine” he said and Jeremy smiled wryly.
The stopped the discussion when Alicia joined them, Harrison made a signal not to bring it up and Jeremy understood.
She took Harrison’s bagel and brought up another topic of discussion and they flowed with it.

After school, Alicia met Jeremy at his locker while he packed his up his backpack.
“Hey,” she smiled at him.
He smiled back and snapped his locker shut before following her.
“Where do you guys study?” He asked.
“In the classroom” she said.
“And the school authority have no problem with that?” He asked.
“Nope. We’re just studying, it’s not like we’re doing anything bad” she said.
“Yeah, I just didn’t think they’d fully trust that” he said honestly.
“Oh they do. I’m the school president anyways, what bad thing could I possibly do to the school” she said, shrugging. “Plus, the janitor and nurse sometimes spends the night here, we don’t study in school when they don’t”
Jeremy muttered an ‘oh’ as they walked.
“I’ve been the president for two terms straight,” she continued. “My grade are good, though not the best but still I was preferred over Rebecca. Although, I once took the first position but recently, I’m just stuck in second place; it’s not all that great but it’s not bad either, right?” She asked and he glanced at her to see her gaze on him.
“Oh..um of course” he answered, unaware that she was asking him at first.
“But still I’m not totally impressed with myself but I got chosen over that freak even with all her perfect grade and all, I still got more of everyone’s love; I’m impressed with myself for that!” She said, flipping her chestnut hair backwards.
“I see” Jeremy said.
“And one more thing, you should be super careful about that blue-haired seatmate of yours, she’s very voracious” she added before walking into the class.

Jeremy followed and they drew the chairs and arranged them in column so they could face each other. Alicia sat beside Jeremy and another girl while Harrison sat opposite him.
Jeremy saw everyone take out their mathematics book and he followed.
“Let’s study what we were given in class; trigonometry” Alicia stated. “Who else didn’t really understand the topic?” She asked and they all answered positively, excluding Jeremy.

What is there to not understand? The teacher was pretty clear in her teachings. Jeremy thought.
“Okay, if everyone doesn’t understand then who’ll lead the class?” Alicia inquired, irritated.
“Harrison, did you put buds in your ears when the topic was being taught?” Alicia asked him. He shrugged and lowered his gaze and she rolled her eyes at him.
Jeremy glanced at the time, twenty minutes had passed already.
“If I had been in class then I’d have taken the topic now but I wasn’t. How do we pass the assignment if no one understands it?” She added.
“I’ll take it” Jeremy suggested.
“Really?” Alicia asked.
“Yeah, it’s nothing” he added and she smiled before nodding in approval.. scowling at the others.

After the solvings and illustrations which Jeremy had to explain profusely to their understanding, they picked out some exercises and in no time finished up.
“Wow. This is pretty easy!” Harrison exclaimed, dropping his pen.
Everyone else rounded up and they checked for the answers and scored themselves.
“Who would’ve thought I’d ever understand anything this complex in maths” Brianna sighed, smiling at her score.
“I wish this is how that big bellied teacher, teaches. I wouldn’t be having those horrible scores!” Fiona added.
“Thank goodness you finally realise your scores are horrible,” Alicia said. “And we’ll be repeating this tomorrow, you’ll lead us” she added and Fiona nodded in anticipation.

After the lessons, they walked out of the class together.
“You know, you should consider working as a part-time mathematics tutor, you’d earn a lot, I tell you” Harrison joked as they walked out of the school building.
“There’s no lie in that” Fiona agreed. “And I’ll sure hire you” she added.
Jeremy chuckled. “I think you guys are making a big deal out of this. Me knowing trigonometry, doesn’t mean I know it all” Jeremy said.
“Yeah, no one knows it all but trigonometry..?” Brianna shook her head in disapproval, making everyone laugh.
“We’re all going this way,” Alicia said. “It’s just you and Harrison left on that way, maybe when we find one more student for the group, it’d be a tie on each side. We’ll see in school tomorrow then” she said.
“I’ll call-
“You better not!” She interrupted Harrison. “I won’t take it, anyways” she added and Harrison pouted.
“Well, I won’t stop until you do” he said adamantly, giving her a cute look and she rolled her eyes.
“Alright, bye guys” she waved and they were all about parting when Alicia suddenly stopped.
“Jeremy?!” She called, running to meet him and Harrison. They stopped to enable her meet them.
“Yeah?” Jeremy answered.
“Here,” she gave him her phone. “Type your phone number” she said.
Jeremy subconsciously glanced at Harrison and he shook his head in disapproval.
