Rachael finally regained consciousness after some minutes. She moved slowly aside and looked at her husband who sat close to her. “Honey what happened?”

“How are you feeling Honey? You scared me.” Nosa answered her.

“I think I’m okay ” She said and stood up and sat next to Nora on the chair. She looked around and sighted Joe and Nathan far opposite watching her. Nathan found it hard to look straight at his mother.

It finally dawned on Rachael and she looked at Nora and Nosa and started crying. ” I am so sorry.”

“Sorry? You are sorry? Is that all you can say? ” Nora responded. “Mum tell me if this man here is not your former husband and this young man here Nathan is not your son. Please I need an answer. Nothing but the truth.”

“Nora what are you talking about?” Nosa asked in shock. “Are you saying she’s married to that man before. And who are these people?” he asked looking at Joe and Nathan. “Can someone tell me what’s going on here before I lose my mind?”

Nora stood up still crying. Dad ask your wife. That’s the same answer I’m seeking here.”

Racheal felt embarrassed, ashamed all she could do then was to cry. She never envisaged such a thing would happen. It dawn on her that truth can never be hidden forever. Just like Joe, the past had come to haunt her. It became worse for her when she saw the disgusting look on Nathan and she quickly read his mood. She knew the time had come to finally let the cat out of the bag.

“I’m sorry honey” she told Nosa who was looking at her to confirm the horrible thing Nora had just said.

“It’s true I was married before you? this man here, his name is Joe and the one next to him is my son. I left him when he was still a baby..”

“What!” Nosa shouted “You mean you had a family before I met you and you are just telling me this now? Racheal I have lived my life for you. I did every thing for you even moving here from my base to suit your wishes and despite all you hid all these from me? You deceived me Racheal.” Nosa shouted in anger.

“I can explain Nosa. Please am sorry” she said kneeling before her husband.

Nora quickly interrupted “Well, tell him that you abandoned a one day old baby too mum. How could you be so heartless?”

“I’m sorry my daughter I never wanted or wished all these to happen.” Racheal looked at Nora

who kept nodding her head and tears in her eyes.

“Your sorry doesn’t count mum. It doesn’t matter anymore. it’s too late for that. You have no idea of the damage you have caused me and your son and what we have committed. For crying out loud you should have said something like this earlier before I could fall in love with my brother!” she screamed so high.

Racheal looked at her daughter and then Nathan. “You mean.. You are… You have had…?”

“Oh yeah!” Nathan spoke. “You are the worst mother I have ever met in my life. You don’t deserve being a mother ” he spat on the floor. “In fact, forget that I even exist. because for me you are nothing. I buried my real and true mother. The woman who gave her life for me despite the fact that she didnt give birth to me. She paid the price and suffered consequences of marrying this your husband here” he said pointing at his father. “And both of you can not be compared to her. You both are evil” he said angrily,

his eyes filled with tears which he tried fighting back.

Racheal stood up to walk to him. “I’m sorry my son please forgive me. I was not strong enough. Please I beg you in the name of God forgive me, I’m your mother and I love you. I loved you the first time I saw you. please you have to understand..” she cried

“Don’t come near me woman, you are not my mother. Don’t you get it. I don’t want anything to do with you, nothing! stay away from my life like you have done for twenty seven years. I hate you for ruining my life. I didnt ask for all these” Nathan cried. “I never begged you both to bring me to this God forsaken life and now the woman that I have loved turns out to be my sister and all you can say is sorry.” He told her sternly. “What do you want from me? Alright you want me to tell you I slept with my sister, that I can’t even stay away from her even after I was told it’s forbidden? Ahah! Tell me both of you, how do you expect us to forgive you and forget what has happened? You and this man here ” he added looking at his father who sat head down crying. “you and him couldnt live and settle your issues and now we are the ones to suffer.” He shouted uncontrollably.

Nora was crying sadly. Nosa held her close as tears ran his face too. He felt for his daughter. He could remember how excited and happy she sounded on the phone conversion as she told him about her boyfriend. Now he had no words. Knowing his wife had such a shocking secret hidden all these years they spent together was hurting him hard as well.

He now understood why she was the way he found her and why for some years she never opened her heart to him. He had to be patient for them to reach that far. Now that things where okay between them, the past had resurfaced. He felt for Nathan too. The boy was was badly hurt. Also, Joe looked devasted, he wondered why Racheal had to make all those people go through such ordeal. Even her excuse of having a misbehaving husband didn’t amount to the pain the people in that room were suffering. He couldn’t say anything because he had no idea what to do at that moment.

His love for Racheal was however stronger than the pain. He went to her she knelt and lifted her. She was so much hurt. He could feel her heart.

“I’m sorry please, what else can I say to you all. Please I’m sorry. You both cannot be together. I gave birth to both of you.” she said while sobbing.

“I’m sorry Joe” she looked at her former husband. “Forgive me for leaving like that. I was badly hurt and didnt think through things.”

Joe nodded silently. “It’s your son you are supposed to apologise to Racheal.”

Nora couldn’t take it any more. Deep down she had hoped all the events were just a dream. She wished that her mother would tell her she was not Nathan’s mother and that she would somehow end up with him and live a normal life. She looked at the devastated Nathan, the pain in Joe and her father’s eyes, shaking her head, she lifted the long dress she was wearing and ran as fast as she could to the kitchen.

Nathan followed her and she slammed the door before he could catch up. The door was transparent because it was made up of glass so Nathan could see through it. “Stop it now Nora!” He screamed when he saw her holding something like a knife. She held the longest knife. “I’m sorry Nathan!” she shouted crying. “I cant live any more.”

“No! Please Noooooo!” He screamed. His noise attracted everyone in the sitting room. They all rushed and stood by the door watching and screaming.

They saw how she raised the knife and stabbed herself. She fell. Her dress quickly soaked in a pool of blood.

“Nora!” Nosa screamed. “No my baby, please someone open this door!” he shouted desperately while Racheal fell slowly back to the floor her hands on her mouth.

Nathan quickly took the flower base next to him and broke the glass into smithereens. He put his hand Inside and unlocked the door, he slowly pulled out the knife while Nora gasping, tried to talk but her head fell unconscious on Nathan’s lap.

“Oh Nora please don’t do this to me” He quickly lifted her and rushed to his car.

“We need to take her to the hospital” He told Nosa who followed him immediately.

“Pray she lives!” Nathan told Racheal when he saw her following them outside. “Better pray she survives or else…”
